I was recently invited by @kempinskialkhobar to review their new Mexican menu at Flame Restaurant, a creation by Chef Eduardo Gutierrez. Promising authentic Mexican food without having to leave Al-Khobar, I was quite excited at the prospect of experiencing their set menu.

At SR. 150 including VAT and only available on Mondays from 6pm, the menu is quite simple serving up some well-known favourites. The welcome drink wasn’t my favourite though and it packs some heat that got me warmed up.

First on the table was the ‘Chef’s Special Mexican Soup’ made with pureed sweet potato, coconut milk and a healthy dollop of butter. I loved how comforting it was and it would have tasted better with a hint of cream. Nevertheless, I would definitely ask for seconds.

The Nachos were next and I loved the fact that the corn chips were made in-house. Crisp to the bite, I loved the guacamole and bean combination and this didn’t take long for us to wipe clean. Do keep in mind that everything on the menu can be refilled so don’t be afraid to ask for more.

Chef Eduardo’s choice of Tapas includes Burritos, Fajitas and Quesadillas with the Burrito being our personal favourite. They also serve a side of sauces like Chimichurri, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole and a spicy sauce that compliments the tapas well. Rolling up Fajitas turned out to be a fun activity with the wife and I adding both meat and chicken and mixing up the sauces to try different flavour profiles. The Fajitas on their own are a tad bit bland but the miracle sauces do the trick. They offered to bring us some more which we politely refused since we barely had any space left for more.

The evening ended with some dessert and we decided to try the Icey Nougat and Mexican Flan. The Mexican Flan was plated to impress with a gold foil atop the flan. I loved how creamy it was and surprisingly it wasn’t too heavy either.

150 SR. Might sound pricey to some, but with free refills for all the items on the menu and getting to experience proper Mexican food, this is a great bargain.

Remember it’s only available on Monday so make sure to reserve your seat in advance.
